On June 2nd, 2025, Lt. Hon. The Lord Mayor, Alastair King, serving as the 696th Lord Mayor of the City of London, awarded Raj the title of Freeman of the City of London.
The prestigious Freedom of the City of London award is an esteemed honor that any individual, regardless of nationality, who has made notable contributions to public life, commerce, or the arts can be considered for.
Prior to 1996, the Freedom was open only to UK nationals and Heads of State. Since opening up the honor to Non-UK Nationals and Non-Heads of State in 1996, approximately 100 citizens of India have been granted the Freedom. Notable international recipients include Jawaharlal Nehru, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, Dame Judi Dench, Florence Nightingale, Shabana Azmi and many others.
The origins of the Freedom of the City of London date back to 13th century AD, a significant period when individuals needed recognition as freemen to conduct business within the city. Being granted this title allowed trade and conferred privileges such as the right to carry a sword in public and trade goods in the City free of toll tax. Essentially, it represented a form of citizenship with substantial social and economic implications.
As time has progressed, the tradition has evolved. The Freedom is now awarded not only for trade-related reasons but also in recognition of significant contributions to society—through public service, achievements in the arts or sciences or business, or charitable endeavors. This honor is conferred annually by the Lord Mayor of London, whose role reflects the continuity of these cherished traditions.
To add to this happiness he is also awarded THE BEST BOY of London Business School this year too.
The D.P.Y.A family is very Proud of You!!!
